Samsung Electronics Co. will launch its new Android XR headset in South Korea before expanding to international markets, the company confirmed, though it has not set a timeline for global availability. The rollout strategy mirrors Apple Inc.’s approach with its Vision Pro, which debuted exclusively in the U.S. before reaching other countries in 2024.
Industry estimates put the Samsung headset’s price between $1,800 and $3,000, based on currency conversions of figures reported by South Korea’s Newsworks. Analysts say the final price in overseas markets could shift, with tariffs and trade policies now more firmly in place than when Samsung launched its Galaxy S25 Edge earlier this year.
The device is positioned at the premium end of the extended reality (XR) market, competing directly with Apple’s Vision Pro. It will feature high pixel density displays intended to deliver sharper, more immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences. Analysts note the pricing underscores the continued gap between top-tier XR devices and mass-market alternatives such as Meta Platforms Inc.’s Quest headsets.
"Samsung unveiled the concept and design of the device in late 2024 as part of a partnership with Alphabet Inc.’s Google. The release also marks the debut of the Android XR platform, envisioned as a foundation for a broader hardware ecosystem. "
TThe platform, comparable to Meta’s Horizon OS, is built on the Android Open Source Project and will enable other manufacturers to develop headsets at different price points. Competitors are already signaling interest. XReal has teased its Project Ara smart glasses, expected to compete in the lower-priced category against devices like the $649 Real One Pro. Analysts say Samsung’s entry is likely to set benchmarks in design and performance while opening the field for more affordable Android XR options.
